This important webinar “delves into the unique challenges and opportunities associated with lactation in diverse family structures, including chestfeeding, queer families, and those with accessibility needs. As we strive for inclusivity in healthcare, understanding the nuances of different lactation experiences is crucial. Participants will engage with experts in the field who are advocates and members of these communities. Through presentations and discussions led by Ky Kennedy and Amber Crews, attendees will gain insights into lactation support’s practical and emotional aspects tailored to diverse families. This session aims to broaden perspectives, educate on specific needs, and equip providers with the tools to offer compassionate, competent care to all families.”

Objectives:

  • Recognize the specific lactation challenges faced by queer, trans, and disabled parents and the ways these can impact lactation success.
  • Apply strategies to create a supportive, inclusive environment in clinical settings that respects and acknowledges diverse family dynamics.
  • Gain knowledge on how to advocate for and support lactation in populations that historically face higher levels of health disparities or societal stigma.
  • Develop communication skills that are sensitive to the needs and identities of diverse families to enhance the effectiveness of lactation support.
  • Identify and apply practical, actionable solutions that can be implemented to improve accessibility in lactation support services, including technological aids, policy changes, and community outreach initiatives.
