Why are Community Partners so important?
Breastfeeding “in public” is not always easy. Many parents, especially new parents, feel unsure about how they will manage to breastfeed in public or are worried that they will be asked to stop or cover up or leave. News articles and social media posts describe the experiences of others who have not been welcomed to feed their babies in public. Families have shared that they chose to stop breast/chestfeeding because breastfeeding in public was too much of a challenge. Families need welcoming and safe spaces where they know that they can safely nurse their babies without worry. That is what our amazing Community Partners affirm!
How can Employers help?
Going back to work or school is not easy either! Many lactating employees know that they have the protection of the PUMP Act, which is helpful. However, it is one thing to allow employees to take breaks and to provide a space in the workplace to express their milk. It is another thing to have an employer who understands the importance of providing lactation support and welcomes employees to take breaks to express their milk or nurse their children and provides a space, shielded from view and free from intrusion, with that same welcome. It sometimes is a challenge for employers to provide lactation supports. We are grateful to our breastfeeding-friendly employers for their commitment to supporting their lactating employees!
