Exciting new!
Breastfeed Orange NC is pleased to announce that Carrboro has successfully completed all Ten Steps towards a Breastfeeding Family Friendly Community. And you are invited to the celebration!

The Breastfeeding Family Friendly Community designation is awarded to communities that complete the Ten Steps. In true community spirit in Carrboro, the award is the result of the welcome, hard work, and support of stakeholders and advocates; Carrboro’s Mayor, Town Council, and Town departments and staff; the County and local health leadership and the healthcare community; Carrboro businesses and organizations; and our local education system and childcare programs.
Here is just a summary of the amazing community effort towards completing the Ten Steps!
- Step 1 – The Carrboro Mayor and Town Council started the local initiative with a proclamation of the Town’s resolve to supporting lactating families and building a Breastfeeding Family Friendly Community.
- Step 2 – There’s a welcoming atmosphere in the Carrboro community with Town signs and social media coverage and support from our First Responders about protections for breastfeeding parents.
- Step 3 – Our County and local Health Leadership support optimal infant feeding recommendations, as defined by the World Health Organization.
- Step 4 – Families in Carrboro are informed about the importance of breastfeeding and feeding human milk through non-commercial information and resources distributed by community organizations, as well as local healthcare providers.
- Step 5 – Healthcare providers in the community are able to support families to achieve their infant feeding goals.
- Step 6 – Community lactation support is available, and community collaboration between health systems and community partners is well-documented.
- Step 7 – Carrboro businesses and organizations have stepped up to sign on to the initiative as community partners.
- Step 8 – Healthcare facilities and local businesses follow the principles of The International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes; healthcare and local businesses are free from advertising and promoting commercial infant and toddler formula.
- Step 9 – The Business Case for Breastfeeding is promoted by the NC Department of Health and Human Services, and Carrboro business organizations have provided support by sharing information within the business community.
- Step 10 – Our local education system and childcare programs support families through curriculum and books that show breastfeeding.
…families are a priority in the Town of Carrboro, and part of helping families to thrive is ensuring that they receive community support to develop and sustain healthy lifestyles.
